Ability North London Carbon Reduction Plan by 2050

Sustainable Sourcing & “Source Local First”

The Council emphasizes keeping spend local to reduce transportation emissions and support the community. Ability North London follow this plan, and:

  • Action: Transition food and supply purchasing to Hackney-based vendors.
  • Action: Use Fair Trade products (tea, coffee, sugar) to align with the Council’s status as a Fairtrade organization.
  • Action: Consolidate orders to limit the frequency of deliveries, reducing carbon emissions and local air pollution.

Waste Reduction & Circular Procurement

Ability prioritizes a “Circular Procurement” approach—reducing demand, reusing, and recycling.

  • Action: Eliminate all avoidable single-use plastics and non-recyclable catering materials.
  • Action: Source cleaning materials that are biodegradable and plant-based.
  • Action: Use “Supplier Take-Back” schemes for electronics or equipment to ensure items are reprocessed or recycled rather than sent to a landfill.

Energy Efficiency & Low-Carbon Power

Ability NL will switch to 100% renewable electricity by 2050.

  • Action: Conduct an environmental impact audit of the day service facility to identify energy leaks or inefficiencies.
  • Action: Switch to a 100% renewable electricity provider if the service manages its own utility contracts by 2050.
  • Action: Ensure all new equipment (kitchen appliances, computers) is selected based on high energy efficiency ratings.

Green Transport & Travel

We aim to minimize the negative impact of freight and staff travel is a key green objective.

  • Action: Require staff to use public transport for work-related travel where possible.
  • Action: If a vehicle is required for transporting service users, prioritize Electric Vehicles (EV) or those using low-emission fuel technologies like HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).
  • Action: Promote the Bike4Work scheme for employees to reduce commuting emissions.

Social & Health Co-benefits

At Ability, green objectives must have parity with social outcomes, particularly regarding health inequalities.

  • Action: Integrate nature-based activities or small-scale gardening into the day program to support the “Health and Wellbeing Strategy” while improving local environmental quality.
  • Action: Use the day service’s purchasing power to create “Green Jobs” or training opportunities for local residents, specifically targeting those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
